A Huntly man accused of docking a dog’s tail illegally has been prosecuted after it suffered

A Huntly man accused of docking a dog’s tail illegally has been prosecuted after it suffered a painful injury as a result. William Brown was sentenced for 150 hours’ community work at the Huntly District Court, disqualified from owning animals indefinitely and ordered to pay the SPCA $954.51. 60% of ‘Thimble’s’ tail was amputated, exposing bone, muscle and tendon protruding from the skin, which had a clearly visible line.  SPCA CEO Andrea Midgen says, “This line was consistent with an injury caused by ligation of the tail, with or without an extra cutting trauma.” “Thimble flinched when his tail was handled and he also showed signs of ‘learned helplessness’, which is seen in animals who have learnt they cannot escape from painful situations.” 1-1/4*18 Decklashing Turnbuckle Brown pleaded guilty on the basis that performing a surgical procedure on an animal and failing to ensure that the animal receives treatment for any discomfort was unreasonable and unnecessary. A Waikato District Animal Control Officer found Thimble, a four-month Doberman puppy roaming the streets when the case began in May 2017. “His injury caused pain and suffering at the time as wel...

Current-driven magnetization switching in ferromagnetic bulk Rashba semiconductor (Ge,Mn)Te

Multiferroic materials with both ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders provide a promising arena for the electrical manipulation of magnetization through the mutual correlation between those ferroic orders. Such a concept of multiferroics may expand to semiconductor with both broken symmetries of spatial inversion and time reversal, that is, polar ferromagnetic semiconductors. Here, we report the observation of current-driven magnetization switching in one such example, (Ge,Mn)Te thin films. The ferromagnetism caused by Mn doping opens an exchange gap in original massless Dirac band of the polar semiconductor GeTe with Rashba-type spin-split bands. The anomalous Hall conductivity is enhanced with increasing hole carrier density, indicating that the contribution of the Berry phase is maximized as the Fermi level approaches the exchange gap. By means of pulse-current injection, the electrical switching of the magnetization is observed in the (Ge,Mn)Te thin films as thick as 200 nm, pointing to the Rashba-Edelstein effect of bulk origin. The efficiency of this effect strongly depends on the Fermi-level position owing to the efficient spin accumulation at around the gap. The magnet...

Raspberry Pi 4 Features Broadcom BCM2711 Processor, Up to 4GB RAM

News, Tutorials, Reviews, and How-Tos related to Embedded Linux and Android, Arduino, ESP8266, Development Boards, TV Boxes, Mini PCs, etc.. Long expected, the Raspberry Pi 4 model B has finally launched, and it should not disappoint with a much more powerful Broadcom BCM2711 quad-core Cortex-A72 processor clocked at up to 1.5 GHz, 1 to 4GB LPDDR4, 4K H.265 video decoding and output support, a proper Gigabit Ethernet port, as well as USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports. Raspberry Pi 4 comes with all those extra features, but the form factor remains the same, and importantly the price is still $35 for the version with 1GB RAM, making Raspberry Pi alternatives suddenly much less interesting. Beside the “true” Gigabit Ethernet port, the good news for people interested in network storage applications is that the shared USB + Ethernet bandwidth is gone, as there’s a separate Gigabit Ethernet transceiver (BCM54213PE), and USB goes through a VIA VL805 PCIe to 4-port USB 3.0 host controller. The latter means BCM2711 comes with a PCIe interface giving the Raspberry Pi foundation some flexibility for future Raspberry Pi SBC’s. There have been at least two hardware changes that have made the new board ...

Monsoonal control on a delayed response of sedimentation to the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake

Infrequent extreme events such as large earthquakes pose hazards and have lasting impacts on landscapes and biogeochemical cycles. Sediments provide valuable records of past events, but unambiguously identifying event deposits is challenging because of nonlinear sediment transport processes and poor age control. Here, we have been able to directly track the propagation of a tectonic signal into stratigraphy using reservoir sediments from before and after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Cycles in magnetic susceptibility allow us to define a precise annual chronology and identify the timing and nature of the earthquake’s sedimentary record. The grain size and Rb/Sr ratio of the sediments responded immediately to the earthquake. However, the changes were muted until 2 years after the event, when intense monsoonal runoff drove accumulation of coarser grains and lower Rb/Sr sediments. The delayed response provides insight into how climatic and tectonic agents interact to control sediment transfer and depositional processes. Sedimentary archives contain valuable information about past climatic, tectonic, and human activities (1–6). Abrupt changes in sediment type, volume, and structure,...

No building access card? No problem if you have new Def Con tools

An improved device for hacking RFID building card access systems will be released at the Def Con Hacking Conference early next month. RFID card access systems are used by most companies to let people into their buildings. But over the last few years, researchers have shown how these systems can be easily bypassed. Francis Brown, a partner at the computer security firm Bishop Fox, has been on the forefront of much of the research. In fact, he recognized some of his tools and methods being used in the TV program Mr. Robot, which has been noted for highly accurate technical detail. Lately, he’s been looking closely at breaching high- and ultra-high frequency RFID (radio-frequency identification) systems, which are increasingly being used for physical security systems. He’s due to give a presentation at this year’s Def Con Hacking Conference in Las Vegas early next month with a bevy of new and improved software and hardware goodies. “There are all sorts of areas that people aren’t thinking about at all that are ripe for exploitation,” he said. Brown said his aim is to make it easier for penetration testers to show how easy it is to clone employee badges, break into buildings and pl...

Our Home — The changing face of produce farming | News Briefs

At the beginning of the 20th century, about a third of the U.S. population lived on farms. Today, less than one percent does. Advances in mechanization have allowed one farmer to work much more acreage. These changes came first to the five major crops that make up the vast majority of planted acreage — corn, wheat, soybeans, rice and cotton. Large farms worked by huge tillers, planters and harvesters are now the norm. But mechanization has been slower to come to the speciality crops, produce like fruits and vegetables. They require delicate handling and harvesting. But that is now rapidly changing. Wish Farms, outside of Plant City, Florida, grows strawberries on 600 acres. The berry plants are grown on plastic mulch with drip tape delivering water and fertilizer. At the end of each growing season in April, the plants are all torn out, and the plastic mulch and drip tape are also torn out and discarded. The fields are then replanted (with new plastic mulch and drip tape) for the next year. The ripe berries have all been handpicked by a seasonal workforce over 600 strong — mostly coming from south of the border. But labor is getting hard to find. The solution? Build a strawberry...

iPhones and iPads finally group notifications thanks to iOS 12. Multiple notifications from the same app

iPhones and iPads finally group notifications thanks to iOS 12. Multiple notifications from the same app are bundled together, making the notification center less messy and overwhelming. But Apple still lets you “unbundle” notifications for individual apps. For example, you might want to see individual notifications from your favorite chat app in the notification center, making it easier to skim through all your new messages without the additional tap. Tap “Notification Grouping” under Options at the bottom of the app’s notification settings screen. Tap the “Off” option here to disable notification grouping for the app. You’ll see each of the app’s notifications appear alone in the notification center. 1.0mm Fpc Connector Repeat this process for every individual app for which you want to disable notification grouping. There’s no way to disable notification grouping for all apps on your system at once—you have disable it for each app separately. The default setting for each app on your system is “Automatic.” This always groups notifications by app, but your iPhone or iPad may sometimes create separate bundles for other reasons. For example, if you have a bunch of new emails in t...
